Background:
Newman School is a special school in Rotherham, which caters to a wide range of needs and abilities. The school is officially registered to cater to 120 pupils at its main site located in Whiston. Following Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council's (RMBC) acquisition of the former Dinnington College site, part of the site was annexed for the use of Newman School to meet the increasing demand for places. A report approved by RMBC's cabinet proposed that the Dinnington Annex be formally recognised as a permanent satellite site, and that the school's registered number of places be increased to reflect the additional capacity. Currently the school caters for 186 pupils across both the Whiston and Dinnington sites.
This consultation considers two proposals.
First, that the school increase its registered number of places from 120, to 195, to recognise its increased capacity and to provide additional scope to grow beyond the current number of attendees, following further planned developments of the Newman School estate.
The second proposal is to request the formal recognition of the Dinnington Annex, as a permanent satellite base of Newman School, under the school's URN.
Newman School and TEAM Education Trust do not anticipate any detrimental effect on those students already attending its main site at Whiston, or the Dinnington Annex. Whilst these proposals are significant changes to the school, they are in keeping with the current status quo, as they reflect historical amendments. This consultation is required to support a retrospective application to the DFE to recognise those historical changes.
Consultation Timeline:
The consultation will run until 11:59pm on 26th September 2024, and we are keen to hear thoughts from all of those involved in the school, the wider local community and our local neighbours.
